Tekeningen op Mergel

Reporting from Limburg: De oudste tekens stammen uit de 14e eeuw en zijn merktekens van eigenaren. De vele tekeningen zijn vaak gemaakt met houtskool (zoals op de foto) of rood krijt. Je moet het zelf zien en beleven maar misschien heb je dat al eens gedaan en zo niet dan is het zeker de moeite waard. Wij zijn er al twee keer geweest maar de eerste keer is natuurlijk het spannendste.

The oldest signs dated 14th century are concessionsigns. Beside these signs also a large number of drawings occurs, charcoal (see photo) or red red ochre made.

Grotten van St. Pieter

Reporting from Limburg: Een imposant grottenstelsel met ongeveer 20.000 gangen in z'n totaliteit dus ook de andere grotten meegeteld. De temperatuur is constant 9-10 graden en de luchtvochtigheid is heel hoog. De stippen die je op de foto ziet zijn kleine waterdruppeltjes in wording die vlak voor de lens zweven en sterk belicht worden door de flitser.

English info: The famouse 'St. Pietersberg' caves are the result of centuries of excavation of marl, a building stone. What we now see is an enormous labyrinth of more than 20,000 passages. The stone-hewers have left their marks. On the walls are interesting inscriptions, some extremely old; artists too, have been at work here. During the many sieges Maastricht has suffered, and also during the last world war, local inhabitants used the passages as a shelter; some of the emergency provisions are still to be seen.The temperature in the caves is 9-10 degrees Celcius; visitors are therefore advised to take a cardigan, pullover or coat with them. The round-trips, which last about an hour, are led by official VVV Tourist Office guides. Two sections of the labyrinths of Mount St. Pieter are open to the public. Source: VVV.
