Thanks for putting me in your link box :-))
Great photos of Sinterklaas en de zwarte mann. They came to us when our children were little. But here it's the 6th December when Nikolaus comes en de zwaarte man heet hier 'Knecht Ruprecht'. He wants to punish bad children ;-)

I can't get over how crisp and clean and vibrant the colors are. The face of this person is flawless. What is the significance of the darkened faces?

Wow -- love Santa's outfit! You guys dress him up a lot better than we do over her in the United States :) He looks like Royalty. Your shots of him are wonderful!

We celebrate Thanksgiving here in the US on Thursday of this week.

Great pictures, and nice to see traditions being kept going.
Like Abe I wondered about the darkened faces. Thankyou for the link by the way.

"Sinterklaas" a name recognizable without a translator and he doesn't even have to do the dirty work! Hope you have many "surprises" on Dec 5. Interesting post and really good pictures!

Thank you all. Abe, of course I use Photoshop and some other programms to improve the pictures.

I do not know why the helpers of Sinterklaas are black but probably it has something to do with an old Spanish tradition. The Pete (Piet) wearing blue clothes is the master Pete, an important job I should say. When I was a child they told us if you were a bad child the black Petes take you back to Spain and throw you in the Pepernoten (round ginger bread-like cookies) mill to make next years Pepernoten. Not very nice but it didn't stop us eating them. I had sleepless nights about all of this, of course that doesn't mean I was a bad boy.

Interesting. I never knew about the history of the whole black pete thing. We'd never get away with that in the US.
